Boy Scouts of America 52nd Jamboree on the Air Saturday, October 17th, 2009
What is the Jamboree on the Air?
Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) is an international Scouting event to promote friendship around the world through Amateur Radio. It engages Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Guides in an annual international Amateur Radio operating event each October.
The Jamboree gives Scouts a chance to contact each other. It also gives Amateur radio operators a chance to familiarize Scouts just how much fun Amateur Radio can be!
Who is sponsoring Jacksonville’s JTOA?
The local JTOA program is sponsored by the Duval County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). These are the same highly-trained Amateur Radio operators that regularly assist various government and volunteer agencies likes JSO, JFRD, Red Cross, and the National Weather Service in the event of a local emergency or natural disaster.
Scouts will get to talk to other Scouts worldwide over Amateur Radio…there is even a simple “J-Language” that has been devised to allow scouts speaking different languages to have simple conversations over the radio.
Where is the Jamboree on the Air?
JTOA will be held at the 24-acre Marsh side campus of Neptune Baptist Church located at 13723 Atlantic Blvd, just 50 yards west of the Intercoastal Waterway. The Jamboree will start at 8:00am and run until 5:30 or 6:00pm
If your troop is interested in participating, please contact Todd Lovelace via email at t.lovelace@comcast.net Depending on the response, we may ask troops to stagger their arrival. There is no charge to participate. Participants should also bring a bag lunch and drink.
