SHAWNEE DISTRICT HISTORY
1920 The Jacksonville area was divided into five Indian Nations: Muskogee, Cherokee, Sioux, Iroquois and Timuquana.
1954 The Shawnee District split from the Timuquana Nation to serve the part of Jacksonville south and east of the river, including the beaches.
1972 Coquina District was formed from part of Shawnee District to serve the beaches.
1980 River Bend was created to serve the area south of Beach Blvd.
1995 Coquina and Shawnee become one again. A small portion of Coquina which had served the very south end of the beach community became part of River Bend.
1995 For two weeks the newly combined Coquina and Shawnee districts were called the Timuquana District before the name officially became Shawnee.
1995 The Achwalogen and Netami chapters of the Order of the Arrow merged to form the Saturiwa Chapter. |
